Why I like to make clay

Hello everyone! Today, I would like to share my love for clay with you. I have been taking ceramics classes at a local art center for about a year and a half. It’s so much fun to make things with my hands. Pottery is a great hobby for retirees. My section is full of elderly people. The ceramic studio is a fun and friendly place for anyone.
Human development
Early retirement can be tricky. Most workers dream of retiring to a life of leisure, but that is not the right goal. It can be fun to play video games and watch TV all day for a few months. However, it will get boring after a while. You need to have a purpose to keep life interesting.
When I retired from my engineering career, I became a stay-at-home dad/blogger. Being a father to a child was a challenge, and it kept me busy for many years. Blogging filled all my time. Now, my son is young, and he doesn’t need much attention. I still spend a lot of time driving him to and from meetings, but he doesn’t need the supervision he used to. He likes to spend time with his friends rather than me. That is understandable. Unfortunately, blogging is on the way out. I run down on this.
Because of that, I have had a personal time lately. This is the main reason why I started taking ceramics classes. I have time, I love clay – and I wanted to see what I could do. The enemy pursued them hard. Feel the good discrimination of some hands. I’ve done a lot of things, and I’m improving every day. It is very satisfying to be good at something. That is the key to a happy retirement. You need personal growth.
I think this is why some workers are unhappy after retirement. People think they will enjoy a leisurely life, but they can really get bored. STAGNATION is just a step away from decline. Everything can wait until the age of 75. You need to find something fun to do and grow.
Things I’ve done
Ok, let’s move on to the RB40 Mini Art. Here are some of the things I did from last year.

My first 4 pieces! Purple spoon breaks are done almost every day. Red Sauce Bowl is Mrs Rb440 to rest her tea bag. The Copper Bowl is my key bowl. The rustic yellow cup is somewhere outside.

I got the peak PortlandIa ago. I prepared these ginkgo nuts from a street tree and stuck them on a ginkgo leaf plate I made. Ginkgo fruit is super stinky, but the nuts are delicious and healthy for you. I have to go out to eat this year.

Sugar ginkgo nuts.

Chicken Satay with spicy peanut sauce, sticky rice, and spicy red onion. Yum!

Mrs. RB40 got a bottle of soy sauce soya from the local part. It took up a ton of room on the counter. So I made a small jar of soy sauce to save space. That’s why I love clay. You can do something you need instead of going out for shopping.

A plate of california roll. Rb40jr’s favorite.

Last night, I made a Thai curry curry and served it in my biggest bowl. It was fun.
A tumor
I was awakened again. IMO, it’s an intimate hobby with ceramics. Hahaha… I made a big pot of kimchi last year and enjoyed several batches of Kimchi. Here is my latest fermentation crock in action. The watermark is very deep, but it seems to work well for this.

Reference banana.

I’ve been roasting these Serrano peppers and a few cloves of garlic for 6 weeks. It was a small thing at first because I didn’t keep them. After a few days, I realized that I could use a small bowl to break them down under the brine. This fermentation worked well.

Spicy!

I grind the pepper and garlic and add some vinegar. Hot sauce is scary. I didn’t kill it, though. It’s good as it is.

A friend from ceramics class gave me a scoby starter for kombucha. Here is my first batch. We have just completed the first stage of fermentation. I poured kombucha into a juice bottle and added a few raspberries from our yard after the second fermentation stage. If I’m lucky, it will add a little fizz and the bottle won’t explode. I know this is not the right bottle. I need to buy a few glass-top bottles soon. I added more tea to the ceramic pot to start another batch.
Pottery is not a cheap hobby
I hope you enjoy my mini art show. The only downside is that it is an expensive hobby. My category has always been very expensive. This part, it costs $400 for 10 classes. Most students would be lucky to get 10 pieces back at the end of the class. Open Studio costs $ 10 / session, and a bag of clay costs about $ 20. Fortunately, I can afford this hobby. The pottery community is also very friendly. It was good.
Are you retired? Do you have a fun hobby or something to encourage personal growth? I will be picking up the next batch of ginger beer. 😉
