Can The New TrumpRx Program Really Save You Money? Here are 43 Drug Costs

As prescription drug costs continue to squeeze household budgets, President Donald Trump’s new TrumpRx platform promises to deliver “quick relief” with discounted drugs.

TrumpRx is a portal that links you to price discounts from participating drug manufacturers.

It’s similar to a prescription coupon aggregator and is based on the prescription savings platform GoodRx, which explains on its website that it is “the primary integration partner of TrumpRx, enabling leading product pricing.”

When you visit the TrumpRx website, you can search for your medication or browse 43 medications. If you see a match for your prescription, you can click on it and you will be directed to the drug manufacturer’s site to complete your purchase. You still need a valid prescription from your doctor.

The White House has established agreements with major pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Merck and Pfizer, with plans to expand the list of participating manufacturers.

Who are eligible?

TrumpRx is currently only available to cash-paying patients. The forum clearly states that the discounted price is not available if you use insurance.

And any money you spend with TrumpRx won’t count toward your insurance deductible. For many people, that trade-off can be costly in the long run.

However, several groups may benefit:

  • Uninsured Americans who pay full retail prices
  • People with high deductible health plans who have not met their deductible
  • Patients whose certain medications are not covered by their insurance
  • Anyone who needs drugs that their employer will not cover, such as certain weight loss medications

How TrumpRx compares to other options

Before committing to TrumpRx, compare prices against other options you already have access to, such as existing insurance coverage. Be sure to check your insurance formula and copay structure first.

It’s also worth noting that certain categories can be better with discounts. GLP-1 weight loss medications stand out because employer insurance often excludes them. Getting Wegovy tablets for $149 compared to $1,349 retail represents a significant savings – an 89% discount – for those paying out of pocket.

Fertility drugs also represent a potential sweet spot, as insurance does not usually cover these drugs. For example, the platform advertises an 83% discount on Gonal F, which can translate into thousands of savings during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

As always, it’s wise to shop around. Mark Cuban’s drug website CostPlus is one place to start. WellRx is another. A few extra minutes of comparison shopping can save you hundreds or more.

Weigh your options

Do the following before making changes to the way you fill out instructions:

  1. List your current expenses.
  2. Visit TrumpRx.gov and search to see if your medications are prescribed.
  3. Compare the price of TrumpRx with your current copay.
  4. Check out other discount programs.
  5. Calculate the impact for a full year.
  6. Talk to your doctor about less expensive treatments or plans that may be discounted.

This platform is another addition to your prescription savings toolkit, especially if you don’t have insurance, are stuck with high deductibles or need medications your insurance refuses to cover.
