Is TrumpRx the Answer to Better Health at a Lower Cost?
The launch of TrumpRx.gov — a new federal website designed to lower prescription drug costs — made headlines with promises of big savings. President Donald Trump called the plan “a great thing” that will help Americans be healthier while saving money.
USA Today notes that for the average consumer, the reality is more complicated. Although the site offers real deals on brand-name medications, financial analysts and health care experts warn that it may not be the cheapest option for everyone. In fact, if you’re not careful, you could end up paying more for drugs that are available pennies on the dollar elsewhere.
Here’s what you need to know to navigate the new landscape and protect your wallet.
Brand name trap
The most important detail about TrumpRx is that it currently focuses on brand-name drugs from several major pharmaceutical companies. Although these drugs are listed at discounted rates compared to their regular list prices, the site does not always account for generic equivalents.
According to research by Public Citizen, nearly half of the drugs on the new site are generics available at other pharmacies for much less.
For example, the site lists Pfizer’s heartburn medication, Protonix, for $200.10. While that’s 50% off the list price, it’s a bad deal for most buyers. You can get the generic version (pantoprazole) at pharmacies like Walmart or Safeway for less than $16 using widely available coupons.
The site does not clearly flag if there is a cheap generic. As Public Citizen’s Sarah Karlin-Smith notes, consumers unfamiliar with the wider market may assume that the government site always offers the best prices. That’s not the case.
Where TrumpRx is a good company
Without limitation, the site offers some winnings, especially on lifestyle drugs or treatments that do not have conventional alternatives.
Businessman Mark Cuban, whose company Cost Plus Drugs is a direct competitor, has admitted that TrumpRx has “crushed” him in fertility drugs. For example, the injectable fertility drug Cetrotide is listed at $22.50 on the government’s website. The same drug costs about $50 at Cost Plus Drugs and more than $300 at larger chains like CVS or Walgreens.
If you’re paying cash for brand name treatment, insulin or certain proprietary medications, TrumpRx is worth a look.
The truth about weight loss drugs
For many Americans, the biggest question surrounds popular weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound. The site lists these drugs, but saving is not an exception.
- Zepbound: It’s listed at $299 for a single-dose container — the same price Eli Lilly charges consumers directly.
- Wegovy: Listed at $199 for the first two months – the same as Novo Nordisk’s direct pricing.
While the site does feature these offers, it does not currently discount direct-to-consumer manufacturer prices. However, a separate agreement announced by the administration suggests that Medicare coverage for these drugs will increase significantly in the spring or summer of 2026, with copays as high as $50 for eligible enrollees.
Who should use this site?
TrumpRx is not a substitute for health insurance. It does not process insurance claims, and you cannot use your insurance card on site. It is specifically designed for:
- Cash payers: People without health insurance.
- Underinsured: People with high deductible plans have to pay thousands into the fund before coverage begins.
If you have solid health insurance with low copays, your existing plan may still be your cheapest option. As Dr. Benjamin Rome of Harvard Medical School explains, the site will attract a small group of patients exposed to the full market prices.
How to shop smart
The launch of TrumpRx adds another layer of transparency to an industry known for its apparent lack of transparency by bypassing middlemen such as pharmacy benefit managers. However, it should not be the end of it.
To make sure you’re getting the real low price, follow this workflow before filling a prescription:
- Check your insurance copy first. Your existing health plan may offer a better deal than paying cash.
- Search for a common word. Always look for the chemical name, not just the product name.
- Compare the three sources. Check prices on TrumpRx, Cost Plus Drugs and coupon aggregators like GoodRx.
“It’s not like there’s one place that always has the lowest price,” said Rome. In this diverse market, the only way to consistently save is to shop everywhere.
