Why AI Is a Bad Doctor (and Can Cost You a Fortune)

My wife is a nurse, and if I had a dollar for every time she came home frustrated with a patient who had “done their own research” on the Internet, I would be abandoned on a private island.
For many years, his biggest boss has been Dr. Google, convincing people that the headache was a rare tropical disease.
But recently, the news has changed. Now, people don’t just want signs; they have full conversations with AI chatbots to test them.
Sounds like the future, right? You type in “my stomach hurts,” and a super-smart computer gives you a personalized diagnosis in seconds. It’s free, fast, and feels incredibly confident.
But a major study recently brought down the real test we all need to hear: when it comes to your health, these chatbots aren’t just useless—they can be dangerous. And following their advice can cost you more than just your life.
Research that bursts the AI bubble
We have been told that artificial intelligence is getting smarter every day. We hear stories of AI passing medical licensing exams and people doing well on standardized tests. Naturally, you would think that makes them good at giving medical advice.
According to researchers at the University of Oxford, you’d be wrong.
In a recent study published in a scientific journal Natural Medicineresearchers put massive AI models to the test against 1,300 real people. The goal was to see if using a chatbot helped people make better medical decisions compared to using a traditional search engine.
The results were dire. A study found that people who used AI chatbots did not make better decisions than those who just Googled their symptoms. In fact, for accurate diagnosis, the AI team sometimes does worse.
The researchers were blunt. Dr. Rebecca Payne, GP and lead doctor on the study, said in a press release: “Despite all these explosions, AI is not yet ready to take over the role of the doctor.”
Why “smart” bots give dumb advice
The problem isn’t that AI doesn’t know medical facts. The problem is that he doesn’t know youand he doesn’t know when to stop talking.
This study highlighted some scary examples of AI misconceptions—that’s the technical term for a bot that just does things.
In one experiment, two different users described symptoms of a subarachnoid hemorrhage (a life-threatening type of bleeding in the brain). The AI told one user to seek emergency help. It told one user to “sleep in a dark room.”
Imagine betting your life on a coin flipped like that.
In one case, the chatbot recommended calling an emergency number. Getting caught? Give the UK user an Australian emergency number (“000”). If you have a heart attack in London, dialing Sydney won’t help much.
The high cost of bad advice

If AI minimizes your symptoms and tells you to “stay awake” if you have an infection, you could end up in the emergency room a week later with a condition that costs ten times more to treat.
On the other hand, if the AI determines that your indigestion is a heart condition, you could be spending thousands of dollars in unnecessary ambulance rides and ER visits.
Misinformation is expensive. We see this all the time with financial products—like people wanting to sell “pure” bottled water when tap water is available for free—and it’s equally true in health care.
The “confidence” trap.
The scariest thing about AI isn’t that it’s wrong; that’s it sounds of course.
When you do a Google search, you see a list of websites. You can look at the URL and see if it’s the Mayo Clinic (reliable) or “Bob’s Vitamin Blog” (questionable). You have to do a little work to filter the information.
Chatbots remove that context. They give you a single, authoritative sounding answer written in perfect grammar. It creates a false sense of security. You think you’re talking to a doctor, but you’re actually talking to a predictive text algorithm that’s just guessing at the most likely next word in a sentence.
This is exactly how sophisticated financial scams work. They use formal sounding language and urgent tones to overcome your doubts. Whether it’s a fake bank call or a deceptive chatbot, the result is the same: you trust a source you shouldn’t trust.
What you should do instead
I love technology, and I use AI every day to write emails or condense long documents. But until the technology becomes more mature, keep it out of your medicine cabinet.
If you feel sick, here is a better protocol:
1. Call your doctor’s office: Many insurance and medical practices have a 24-hour nurse line. (My wife calls often, so I know this is true.) It’s usually free, and you’ll be talking to a licensed person, not a robot with hallucinations.
2. Stick to the resources of Part 1: If you must look online, go directly to sites like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Mayo Clinic, or the Cleveland Clinic. Do not rely on the summary generated by the search engine’s AI tool.
3. Trust your gut: As my wife always says, “You know your body better than anyone.” If something goes wrong, don’t let the computer talk you into getting help.
AI may be the future of everything else, but when it comes to your life, the old ways are still the best ways. Don’t let a chatbot gamble with your life—or your wallet.
