Why American Travelers Are Choosing Small Towns Over Big Cities in 2026 (and 5 Affordable Destinations)

The big city vacation is losing its luster. According to the 2026 What the Future travel report from Kayak, 84% of Gen Z and millennial travelers say they’d rather visit a rural area or small town than a big city center.

Low costs and fewer crowds certainly play a role, but that’s not the whole story. About 34% of surveyed travelers said they wanted an authentic experience. They’re looking for the kind of atmosphere found in local bakeries, quiet bays and neighborhoods that have so far been untouched by tourists.

Here’s a look at the best “miniature travel” rankings, according to Travel Hub.

A request to go slow

After years of social media-fueled trips to the same few destinations, young travelers in particular are looking for something that feels authentic. Small towns bring that.

The rankings come from an analysis of flight and hotel searches conducted on Kayak and related products. The study looked at scheduled travel for the full calendar year of 2026 from US airports.

The consumer data was taken from an online survey of just over 2,000 Gen Z and millennial US residents conducted last fall. All respondents left within the last two years.

The results show that small-town America can offer better value. That’s especially important when 70% of young travelers cite cost as the biggest factor shaping their plans for 2026.

Kayak CEO Steve Hafner summarizes the findings:

“Travel is a discretionary expense but remains a top priority for consumers. They are adapting to economic uncertainty by choosing accessible destinations with traveler-friendly policies, and a great range of prices, services and amenities.”

A top value option for small town America

Based on flight searches conducted on Kayak between April and September 2025 for travel throughout the year 2026, here are the best value small towns in the US ranked by average round trip airfare:

  • Punta Gorda, Florida ($262)
  • Charleston, South Carolina ($317)
  • in Sarasota, Florida ($329)
  • Boise, Idaho ($339)
  • Burlington, Vermont ($353)

A quick look at these ‘great’ places

Punta Gorda offers a relaxed pace with its scenic Harborwalk and open-air shops in Fishermen’s Village. It is also home to the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens for a touch of natural art.

Another Florida city on the list is Sarasota, dubbed Florida’s Cultural Coast for its galleries, theaters and performing arts events. You can explore circus history at The Ringling or relax on the quartz sands of Siesta Key.

In Charleston, one big draw is its historic French Quarter and culinary scene that rivals major metros.

In Vermont, Burlington is home to the pedestrian-friendly Church Street Marketplace. You’ll find small boutiques and eateries against the stunning backdrop of Lake Champlain.

And in Boise, you can explore the Basque Block — a hub of Spanish heritage — and the 25-mile blue Boise River Greenbelt that’s great for biking and walking.

For travelers who are willing to trade buildings on cobblestone streets, the numbers suggest that you will have more companies in 2026. Just remember that small towns tend to have limited housing stock compared to larger cities. If you want to pay the lowest fare, the smart move is to book in advance.
