4 Debts You Shouldn’t Put in Default

Another way to reach your financial goals is to “set it and forget it” when saving and investing.

You can even put important debts on autopay to avoid late payment charges. But not everything has to go through automatic payments.

There are some debts that, when automatically renewed, can eat into your bank account and drain your budget.

Here are some things to avoid invoking autopay.

1. Warehouse club membership

Warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club offer annual memberships. With this, you have the option to set auto-renew, so you are billed automatically each year.

Rather than assume you’re getting a good value for a warehouse membership, check it out at renewal time. Instead of mindlessly renewing your membership, you can decide if it’s worth the cost you’re paying.

Costco allows you to manage your automatic renewals online. Select “Renew Membership” under your account and uncheck “Auto-Renew.”

Similarly, Sam’s Club allows you to manage your automatic renewal online. Once you’re logged into your account, you can go to “Auto-renew settings” under the membership banner and uncheck the related box.

2. Amazon Prime Membership

When you sign up for Amazon Prime, the default option is to automatically renew an annual membership.

Paying an annual fee is cheaper than a monthly rate, but when it comes time to renew, do you want to be stuck with the bill automatically? Consider whether you use the main features enough to justify the cost.

You can turn off your automatic renewal by going to “Manage Prime Membership” and clicking “End Membership.” It is also possible to set a reminder to end your membership.

3. Gym membership

Thembeka: Do you really go to the gym that much?

If you automatically sign up for gym membership fees, you may end up paying for services you don’t use. Talk to your gym and ask if you can make the monthly payments yourself. That way, each time you go to pay your bill, you can consider whether sticking with a membership is worth it.

Remember to sign all paperwork canceling your gym membership when you’re ready to save money and exercise at home.

4. Food preparation services

Meal prep services like HelloFresh and Blue Apron deliver ingredients to make meals right to your door. But what happens if you go out of town and forget to skip delivery? What if you don’t use all the ingredients or make a meal?

In some cases, if you don’t remember to change your diet – which can happen if your subscription is an automatic payment – you could end up with a diet you don’t like.

Review how often you make canned food. Maybe it’s time to cancel your lunch box.

Both HelloFresh and Blue Apron make it difficult to cancel, but you can do so on your account profile page.

Both of these services give you the option to pause or skip delivery. If you are unsure about cancelling, you can skip the delivery and see how things go. If you don’t miss a food delivery, go ahead and cancel and save money.
